The Lipstick Blues Lyrics 2023© Sara Phelan

Momma said put your lipstick on if you’re going out tonight
‘Cause every girl needs a little color it’ll make you feel just right
Momma said put that lipstick on child if you’re gonna sing sad news
‘Cause every girl needs color when she sings the blues

Well Momma had six children five boys and me
Yes it was a sweet live a privileged one indeed
But something robbed my Momma of way too many years
It only brought confusion sorrow and tears
Now my Daddy was a doctor and he always paid the bills
We had not wants or needs but hearts got broken still
You see there was no cure for Momma
No no no no no there was no magic pill
Well Momma couldn’t of been finer but she got this thing called Alzheimer’s

It took her mind ten years of pain and so much sorrow
And no one here to blame
So I’ll put my lipstick on child and wail the blues for you
Yeah I’m the bearer of bad news
‘cause even privileged girls get the blues

And if Momma dies before she wakes
Lord find a cure for goodness sake
And I’ll sing that heavenly news
So Folks like me don’t get the blues
Get the blues

Now I’m gonna call my Daddy and hug my brothers too
For I maybe the next one or maybe you or you
And if you die before you wake
Lord find a cure for goodness sake
And I’ll sing that heavenly heavenly heavenly news
So folks like me don’t get the blues
Get the blues
